Trump trashes NATO but can't quit it, thanks to Rubio | Opinion

As much as talk of dropping out of NATO might thrill Trump's old pal, Russian President Vladimir Putin, there's a serious question of whether he can simply make that call.

President Donald Trump's "little excursion" into war with Iran has morphed into a more than a month-long slog, despite his nonstop assertions that his ill-defined mission has been accomplished and that the hostilities will wrap up soon.

And there are two easy predictions to make when Trump is in a bind: He will never accept responsibility for the consequences of his actions, and he'll always blame a familiar nemesis instead.

That's why Trump wants you to focus your fury about the rising cost of gasoline on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the 32-nation pact known as NATO that he has spent a solid decade trashing as obsolete.

In an interview published April 1, Trump told British newspaper The Telegraph that NATO is a "paper tiger" and that he's considering withdrawing America from the alliance. That's because our allies, whom Trump didn't consult before bombing Iran, aren't eager to help him reopen the Strait of Hormuz for oil shipments.

This should make for an awkward scene when NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte visits Washington, DC, on April 8 to meet with Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

Before that meeting, Trump should really check in with Rubio about walking away from NATO.

And the president might also want to talk to his Republican allies in the U.S. Senate. Because as much as talk of dropping out of NATO might thrill Trump's old pal, Russian President Vladimir Putin, there's a serious question of whether he can simply make that call.

Rubio, as a Republican senator from Florida, had a documented history of showing strong support for NATO. He successfully pushed in 2022 for passage of a bipartisan joint resolution that he said in a news release would "explicitly prohibit any President of the United States from withdrawing" from NATO "without the Senate's advice and consent."

That became law in 2023, requiring any president to get support from two-thirds of the Senate's members or an act of Congress to quit NATO.

The Senate did not sound eager this past week to leave NATO, founded in 1949 to keep in check the post-World War II expansion ambitions of what was then the Soviet Union and now Russia.

U.S. Sen. Chris Coons, a Delaware Democrat, and U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, used their posts as ranking members of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense to stand by NATO in response to Trump's threat, calling it "the most successful military alliance in history."

They noted that NATO's Article 5, which says an attack on any member "shall be considered an attack against them all," has only been invoked once, after the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, on America.

"Alliance disputes are as old as the alliance itself," Coons and McConnell wrote in a joint statement issued April 1. "Americans are safer when NATO is strong and united."

U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis, a North Carolina Republican who cochairs the Senate NATO Observer Group, and U.S. Sen. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued their own joint statement in support of NATO on April 2.

"Let us be clear, Congress will not allow the United States to withdraw from NATO," they wrote, citing Rubio's 2023 law, which they noted "clearly states that only Congress can authorize the President to withdraw the U.S. from NATO. That will not happen."

NATO isn't to blame for Trump's warmongering

Trump also ranted and raved during his first term about abandoning NATO. The Department of Justice's Office of Legal Counsel in 2020 published an opinion that said a president has "exclusive power over treaty withdrawal and that Congress is constitutionally prohibited from intruding on this power," according to a report published this Feb. 27 by the Congressional Research Service.

That report noted the Congress and the courts are not bound to consider that opinion as "authoritative," and that there is no "directly controlling judicial precedent" for this kind of fight.

Right-wing publications were cheering on Trump's threat to NATO this past week. And Russia's government has sounded thrilled that a war with their ally, Iran, was driving a wedge between America and NATO.

Iran shutting down the Strait of Hormuz to cause economic pressure in response to U.S.-Israeli bombs was completely predictable. And Trump, because he needs to keep claiming victory in a war he has not won, can't help but contradict his own arguments here about who is to blame.

In his national address on April 1, Trump tried to sell the Strait of Hormuz as a problem for other countries but not America. He urged our allies to "take care of that passage" and to "grab it and cherish it."

But in the next breath, Trump tried to assure Americans that his war in Iran is coming to a close, and that "when this conflict is over, the strait will open naturally."

So he's demanding that NATO fix a problem, but also that it's about to fix itself? Even by Trump's standards, this is absurd.

About 20% of the world's oil transits the Strait of Hormuz and about 80% of it goes to Asian countries. That's a fifth of a product priced in a global market. It doesn't matter where it comes from or where it goes. If it stops flowing, the price of oil goes up everywhere for everyone.

That's the problem Trump created. He didn't have a plan for it. And now he has no solutions. NATO is not to blame for any of that. Trump owns the consequences, no matter what he says.

The Assassins and the Old Man of the Mountain

In 1295 Marco Polo returned to Europe. Amongst the many remarkable stories of his adventures, the legend of the Assassins is perhaps the most extraordinary.

A fanatical order

Whilst travelling east, following the silk road to China, Polo met local people who told him a most incredible story. The story went that in the Syrian mountains, in a remote valley, lived an obscure order of assassins, led by the mysterious Old Man of the Mountains. Hidden away in their valley, they dwelt in a paradise of luxurious gardens and magnificent palaces. However, outsiders could not gain access to this secretive realm since a great fortress guarded the only access.

The assassins regularly smoked hashish, which provided them with such visions of paradise that they were willing to fight fanatically for their Grand Master. So, if a neighbouring ruler were to offend the Old Man, he would send out his assassins to kill them. These drug-crazed killers would pursue their missions with terrifying ferocity, systematically hunting down and slaying any enemy their lord commanded. Because of their reputation for taking hashish, they were known as ‘Hashashin’ – from which we derive the term ‘assassin’.

From this remarkable tale the legend of the Assassins was born. No one can deny the power of Polo’s story. The Assassins today are, if anything, even more iconic and notorious than they became in medieval times. Indeed, an entire blockbuster franchise of video games is based on the legend.

But what was the reality behind this ‘assassin’s creed’? What was the truth behind Polo’s fantastic tales?

Or was it, after all, no more than a myth?

The Travels of Marco Polo

‘The Travels of Marco Polo’ was a travelogue written by Rustichello da Pisa based on the stories Marco Polo told him. The book was probably written around 1298 and based on Polo’s account of his journeys between 1271 and 1295.

They caused an immediate sensation on publication. Some wondered if his remarkable tales of the court of Kublai Khan and assassins were entirely believable. Were they exaggerations? Had Polo even travelled as far as China at all? Had he perhaps invented the whole story?

These are questions that people have been asking ever since. However, these days, the consensus is that Polo’s stories are based around a core of truth.

Truth

Only someone with first hand knowledge of the place at that time could have provided the details Polo gives about China. For example, his accounts of salt production there tally with contemporary Chinese records.

However, whilst there is little doubt that he made the journey he claimed, an open question remains as regards the embellishment or exaggeration of his stories. In the case of his tale of the Assassins, all we know is that he claimed to have heard this story from local people in the Middle East (presumably other Muslims). We don’t really know exactly who these people were or whether they themselves embellished their accounts.

Fortunately, however, we know that the Old Man of the Mountain was a real person. We also know that the people who Polo referred to were a real people. And we know this, not from just from European accounts, but also from Islamic ones.

So, who were the Assassins?

The Ismalis

The Islamic accounts of the people westerners called the ‘Assassins’, but who are properly called Ismalis, provides us with a different and more complete picture from Polo’s dramatic tales. And the people who emerge from these historical records are far more fascinating than anything we find in Polo’s account.

The Ismalis were, and still are, a sect within Shia Islam. They differ from the majority of Shi’ite Muslims in that they accept Isma’il ibn Ja’far as the appointed successor of Ja’far al-Sadiq. For the Ismalis, Isma’il was the sixth of a total of seven Imams (whereas mainstream Shia Islam identifies twelve Imams of which Isma’il is not one).

The Ismalis did not start out as some obscure mountain sect of assassins however. In the medieval Islamic world, the Ismalis wielded considerable power for a time. Indeed, the Ismali Fatimid Caliphate ruled most of the Arab world from 969 CE and 1171 CE.

The Fatimids made their capital in Cairo and are probably most closely associated with Egypt. However, they also maintained a strong traditional powerbase in Syria, where many Ismali Muslims lived.

During its heyday the Fatimid world flourished both culturally and economically. So wealthy were the Fatimids that one Persian visitor was astonished by the sheer magnificence of Cairo in 1047 CE.

But the splendour of the Fatimids was not to last.

The Fall of the Fatimids

By the late C12th the last of the Fatimid Caliphs, Al-Adin found himself increasingly challenged by the growing influence of his Sunni Muslim Vizier – Saladin. By the late 1160s Saladin purged many of his political enemies and established an increasingly dominant influence over the government of the Caliphate.

When Al-Adin died in 1171 (ironically enough, he was quite likely assassinated), Saladin declared the Fatimid Caliphate over. In its place Saladin established the new Ayyubid Caliphate, a Caliphate based on the majority Sunni Islamic faith. With the Fatimids gone, the Ismalis found themselves a religious minority in an Islamic world ruled by a Sunni Caliph.

The Nazari

Even before this time, life had been far from easy for the Ismalis living in Iran and Syria.

At the end of the C11th a group of Ismalis owing allegiance to Imam Nizar established a kingdom in Iran under the leadership of Hasan-i Sabbah. These people became known as the Nazari Ismalis and would soon establish themselves as a significant power in Iran and Syria.

The community was far from secure. Invasions of Turks and later of crusaders posed a real threat. The crusaders saw all Muslims as heathen enemies but the Turks, despite being Muslims themselves, were no less hostile to the Ismalis. The Turks were Sunni and regarded the Ismalis as a heretical sect that needed to be at least contained and at best actively repressed. Caught between these aggressive rival powers, the Nazari had their work cut out to ensure the survival of their communities.

The Nazari lacked the numbers to seriously challenge either the Turks or the crusaders. Instead, where they could, they entered temporary alliances and truces to avoid confrontation, such as with the Turkish lord Ridwan of Aleppo. But sometimes conflict was unavoidable. In 1110 they lost Kafarlatha to the crusaders. Worse came in 1113 when Ridwan died, to be succeeded by Alp Aslan who took a far more hostile stance towards the Nazari. Aleppo suddenly became unsafe as Aslan massacred and imprisoned some 200 Ismalis and confiscated their property. By 1124 the Ismali community had been expelled from Aleppo entirely and forced to seek refuge elsewhere, particularly in Damascus.

However, in 1129, the rulers of Damascus also turned on them. Another massacre and mass confiscation of property followed. Again, the Ismalis were forced to flee. It must have seemed like nowhere would be safe.

Jabal al-Bahra

Eventually, the Islamis turned to Jabal al-Bahra, a coastal mountain range in north-western Syria, for security. Throughout the 1130s they set about building up small communities based in a network of fortresses throughout this region. By 1141 they had gained control of the major fortress of Masyaf, which would serve as their principal stronghold in the area and the primary base for their leadership in Syria.

Over the next thirty years the Ismalis consolidated their hold over this part of the world, adding to their network of mountain fortresses and avoiding any disastrous confrontations with their Turkish and Christian neighbours.

Over time the threat from their Christian neighbours came increasingly from the military orders rather than from the Kingdom of Jerusalem. In 1142 the Knight Hospitallers established themselves in the fortress of the Crac des Chevaliers, right on the southern end of the Jabal al-Bahra. Relations with the Hospitallers and Templars would be tense, frequently erupting into minor conflicts.

Then, in 1162, a young man arrived in the Syrian mountain community of Kahf where he would quickly establish himself as a popular and able local leader. At the time he was just one of many Ismali community leaders. But history would come to remember him as the Old Man of the Mountain.

Rashid al-Din Sinan

Rashid al-Din Sinan was born in a village near Basra in southern Iraq. There he grew up to become a schoolteacher and adopted the Ismali faith. Later, following an argument with his brothers, he travelled to Alamut to study under Imam Hasan II. He showed a particular interest in philosophy and other works from the Fatimid Islamic period. It seems the imam was impressed enough with his young protégé to appoint him to a leadership position in Kahf in 1162. From that point on Sinan did not look back.

It was not long before Sinan had assumed the leadership of the Syrian Nazari community. He worked hard to bolster community defences whilst endeavouring to foster peaceful relations with his powerful neighbours where possible. However, Sinan was all too aware of the growing power and influence of Saladin. When the Fatimids fell in 1171 and the Sunni Ayyubid Caliphate was born, it was clear that the Ismalis would be entering a new and dangerous period in their history.

The Old Man of the Mountain

Sinan decided that the best policy was to attempt to ensure peaceful relations with his Christian neighbours. If this could be achieved at least the Nazari Ismalis would not need to risk fighting both the Ayyubids and the Christians at the same time. With this end in mind, he sent emissaries to King Almaric I of Jerusalem.

His approaches to the King enjoyed some success, no doubt because Almaric was also concerned about the rising power of Saladin. However, the Templars at the time took a more belligerent attitude and ambushed and killed Sinan’s ambassadors on their return journey. Although Almaric punished the Templars, he died shortly afterwards, ending any chance of a permanent rapprochement.

It was during these negotiations that Sinan came to the attention of Christian writers who gave him his iconic name – the Old Man of the Mountain. In fact, Sinan was not that old at the time (only around 39-43 years old).

Later in 1174, Saladin assumed full leadership the Caliphate following the death of his former mentor Nur al-Din. Saladin now set about consolidating his influence over the Muslim world in preparation for a confrontation with the crusaders. The Nazari Ismalis were amongst those that needed to be brought to heel.

Things looked ominous when Saladin invaded Nazari territory and laid siege to their main stronghold at Masyaf. However, Sinan was able to negotiate an accommodation with Saladin via an intermediary. Sinan had somehow managed to come to agreeable terms with the Sunni warlord. It would secure the Ismali holdings in Jabal al-Bahra for several decades to come.

Sinan would go on to continue leading his community until his death in 1193.

Mongol invasion

The Nazari would continue to exist as semi-independent communities for several decades after Sinan’s death. However, the C13th would bring turmoil and change to the region that even the hardy Ismalis could not resist.

Mongol invasion brought chaos to the Middle East. Alamut, the historic Iranian centre of Ismali culture, fell to Hugulu’s Mongol army in 1256. Over the next few years the Mongol horde overran much of Iran and Iraq. Bagdad fell in 1258 and by 1260 Aleppo and Damascus in Syria met the same fate. The Nazari were next and when Masyaf fell to the Mongol onslaught later in 1260, it looked like the end was near.

However, a reprieve came when the Mameluke army from Egypt inflicted a crushing defeat on the Mongols at Ayn Jalut in Palestine. They successfully drove back the Mongal tide, led by the energetic and able Baibars.

The Fall of the Nazari

However, Baibars would prove to be no saviour for the Nazari. Over the next few years he would successfully drive back the Mongols and break the power of what remained of the crusader states. He was now the undisputed master of the Muslim world.

In time Baibars turned his attention to bringing the independent Nazari strongholds under his control. One by one they were all forced to accept the inevitable. By 1273 the last Nazari stronghold surrendered to Baibars’ Mameluke army.

The Ismali Nazari state was finished. However, the Ismali communities themselves did not disappear. They continued, first as subjects of the Mameluke Empire and later of the Ottomans. They may have lost their independence but not their cultural identity.

Assassins

At this point we might ask – what does any of this have to do with an order of assassins?

In 1092 Nizram Al-Mulk, the Vizier of the Seljuk Sultanate, was stabbed to death by an assassin on the road between Bagdad and Isfahan. The allegation was that he had been assassinated on the orders of Hasan-i Sabbah, the Nazari leader at this time. But who was al-Mulk and why would the Sabbah want him dead?

The Seljuk regime of the late C11th was Sunni and regarded the Ismalis as heretics. By the 1080s there was open war between the Seljuks and the Ismalis in Iran and northern Syria. Nizam al-Mulk was actively engaged in planning military campaigns against the Nazari and had ordered Sabbah’s arrest, which made him an obvious target for assassination.

However, the practice of assassination does not prove the existence of an ‘order of assassins’ of the kind Marco Polo describes. Many medieval leaders (both Christian and Muslim) resorted to assassination at different times.

Fanatical devotion

No doubt some Ismali soldiers were highly devoted to their cause. These were a people who had experienced persecution and who, for much of their history, were surrounded by more powerful, hostile neighbours. Such adversity breeds a fervent desire to fight for survival.

There is no doubt that Rashid al-Din Sinan’s ability to keep his people safe in such turbulent times inspired fanatical devotion. This was noted by the contemporary Christian writer William of Tyre:

“Their subjection and obedience to him [Sinan] is such that they regard nothing as too harsh or difficult and eagerly undertake even the most dangerous tasks at his command. … if there happens to be a prince who has incurred the hatred or distrust of this people, the chief places a dagger in the hand of one or several of his followers; those thus designated hasten away at once, regardless of the consequences of the deed or the probability of personal escape.”

William makes no mention of the use of hashish or of the existence of any order of trained assassins. Instead, according to William, Sinan’s followers were motivated purely from a sense of personal loyalty to him.

Rabble

The term ‘hashishin’ literally implies people who are users of hashish. However, it was used at the time by Arabs as a pejorative term, applied generally to lower class rabble or to people of dubious morality. As the Nazari Ismalis were a non-conforming religious minority, it is unsurprising that other Muslims would have held a low opinion of them. Many regarded the Ismalis as dangerous heretics and actively persecuted them as such.

It is therefore quite likely that Marco Polo’s sources may well have been members of a hostile Islamic group that held the Ismalis in contempt. The term ‘assassin’ takes on a very different meaning in this context.

Such pejorative views of the Ismalis found their way into western culture and were further amplified by the natural human tendency to over dramatize.

Paradise Gardens

The fact that the Nazari lived in far-flung, fortified mountain communities made them appear remote and mysterious. The crusaders labelling Sinan ‘the Old Man of the Mountains’ added a further air of mystery to their reputation. Perhaps it is not entirely surprising that myths concerning a paradise like garden, hidden deep within the mountains also attached themselves to the Old Man.

However, there is no evidence that any particularly spectacular gardens were maintained at any of the Nazari mountain strongholds. If anything, these fortresses were very spartan places for the most part.

The historian Juwayni described the Ismali stronghold of Alamut after its fall to the Mongols in the mid C13th. He makes no mention of any gardens, even though he provides a detailed description of some of Alamut’s more impressive features, such as its library and storage facilities. Juwayni, however, found many of the texts in the Alamut library to be heretical and had them burnt. This further underlines the fact that non-Ismali sources (whether Christian or Muslim) cannot be trusted to provide us with an objective view of these people.

Who were the Assassins?

The people we refer to in popular western culture as ‘assassins’ were clearly far more than just ‘assassins’. They were the Nazari Ismalis. Whilst they used assassination as a weapon against their enemies, they were not so different in this respect from many other medieval states. We must remember that that they were almost always fighting enemies at a numerical disadvantage. This, in itself, makes it more likely that they would have needed to resort to subterfuge and assassination rather than brute force.

The Nazari were indeed led by an ‘Old Man of the Mountains’ but he was far more than just a leader of an assassin’s guild. He was the leader of a beleaguered people, surrounded by enemies, simply trying to preserve their culture and their way of life.

Sinan’s people were not devoted to him because they were fired up by hashish or because they had received some esoteric training in the martial arts of assassination. Neither were they acting because they had become captivated by visions of a paradise garden.

The Nazari were devoted to leaders like Sinan because he offered them hope. Hope that their community, their faith, and their way of life could, against all the odds, have a future.

In 1129 the Master, accompanied by three hundred knights, recruited from the noblest houses of Europe, led a huge train of pilgrims to the Holy Land. It was at this time that the Templars formed part of the Christian contingent which, allied with the Assassins, tried to take Damascus. [And it wasn't the first time nor the last that the Christian Knights Templar, or supposedly Christian Knights Templar (they really weren't Christian at all) were allied with the Assassins.] Were they (as the Orientalist von Hammer alleges)109 connected in some secret way with the Assassins? [Yes, our research shows that it is a historical fact. And it is also a historical fact that the Assassins were prepared to adopt Christianity if they could gain greater power thereby (Christianity, that is, on the surface, just as the Knights Templar had done)]. Hammer points to the similarities of the two organizations. The followers of Hasan Ibn Sabah were in contact with the Templars, and had a similar method of organization. They were in existence before the Templars were formed: “The Ismailians ([or] Assassins) was the original, and [folks] the Order of the Templars, [was] the copy.”

The balance of Western opinion is against this contention; more particularly because, one feels from wide reading of historians, great sympathy is felt for the cruelly treated and a arbitrarily dispossessed Templars. Thus Keightley, who made a close study of the Order those who would claim that the Templars were an Assassin branch [but, when you do research into the (laughs) associations and memberships of Keightley, you'll find that Keightley was himself a Knight Templar. And he said:]

“When, nearly thirty years after their institution, the Pope gave them permission to wear a cross on their mantle, like the rival Hospitaller Order, no color could present itself to well suited to those who daily and hourly exposed themselves to martyrdom as that of blood, in which there was so much of what was symbolical. With respect to internal organization it will, we apprehend, be always found that this is for the most part of the growth of time and the product of circumstances; and it always nearly the same where these last are similar.”110

[And you find this kind of rhetoric, semantics, all throughout the writings of those who wish to cover the true origin and the true meaning of Mystery Babylon.]

The famous question of the three thousand gold pieces paid by the Syrian branch of the Assassins to the Templars is another matter which has [of course] never been settled. One opinion holds that this money was given as a tribute to the Christians; the other, that it was a secret allowance from the larger to the small organization. [Which it really was as the Assassins wished to expand their control and remember their original goal was to take over the entire world by the systematic infiltration and control of each individual country.] Those who think that the Assassins were fanatical Moslems, and therefore would not form any alliance with those who to them were infidels, should be reminded that to the followers of the Old Man of the Mountains only he was right, and the Saracens who were fighting the Holy War for Allah against the Crusaders were as bad as anyone else who did not accept the Assassin doctrine.

[And it is true today: “If you are not one of us, you are nothing.” “The ends justify the means.” “The strength of our Order exists in the fact that we manifest ourselves under many different names and many different occupations, and sometimes even seem to oppose ourselves. But at the highest level, we are of one mind."

And I could go on, and on (laughs), and on, and you all know that I could go on and on and on. For I have studied this for so many years that I eat, drink and sleep it. Oh yes.]

[Well, eventually] grave charges against the Templars during the Crusades included the allegation that they were fighting for themselves alone. More than one historical incident bears this out. The Christians had besieged the town of Ascalon in 1153, and were engaged upon burning down the walls with large piles of inflammable materials. Part of the wall fell after a whole night of this burning. The Christian army was about to enter, when the Master of the Temple (Bernard de Tremelai)

claimed the right to take the town himself. This was because the first contingent into a conquered town had the whole spoils. As it happened, the garrison rallied and killed the Templars, closing the breach. There seem good grounds for believing that the power which they had gained caused the Templars to devote their efforts as much to their own Order's welfare as to the cause of the Cross, in spite of their tremendous sacrifices for that cause. Having no loyalty to any territorial chief, they obeyed their Master alone, and hence no softening political pressure could be put upon them. [Well,] this might well have led to an idea that they were an invisible super-state [and that is exactly the fact]; and this does show some similarity with the invisible empire of the Assassins. If none can deny their bravery, their high-handedness and exclusivity, in less than a hundred and fifty years after their founding gave them the reputation of considering themselves almost a law unto themselves.

The 9/11 attacks were the deadliest on American soil since the shock attack at Pearl Harbor 60 years before, and the sense of outrage was reminiscent of that moment. Background

Although to many Americans 9/11 seemed like a random act of terror, the roots of the event had been developing for years. A combination of factors that coalesced in the late 1990s led the catastrophic event. These factors included regional conditions in the Middle East that motivated the perpetrators, as well as intelligence lapses and failures that left the United States vulnerable.

Osama Bin Laden was relatively unknown in the United States before 9/11, even as he was amassing popularity, followers, and fame in the Middle East during the 1990s. In 1988, he was one of the founders of al Qaeda, a militant Islamic terrorist organization that organized and carried out the 9/11 attacks. Bin Laden called for indiscriminate killing of all Americans who, he claimed, were “the worst thieves in the world today” (9/11 Report, page 47). It was the perfect historical moment for that rallying cry.

Throughout the 20th century, a wave of secular, nationalist revolutions swept through the Middle East, taking root in Egypt, Libya, Iraq, Yemen, and other countries. While these movements were awash in promising ideology, the new regimes quickly became autocratic and suppressed dissent. Their critics turned to violent revolution to express their dissatisfaction with the secular governments.

At the same time, social malaise, especially among young men who were struggling to find decent jobs and start their own families in corrupt oil states, provided easy targets for radicalization. Bin Laden’s message that America was the “head of the snake” and the root of all society’s problems resonated well with the discontent.

By the mid-1990s, Bin Laden was the head of al Qaeda, a multifaceted and highly developed terrorist network carrying out attack after attack on Americans in the Middle East. It was a new type of terrorism to which the US intelligence agencies struggled to adapt. Much of the intelligence community had not even imaged the specific type of hijacking and terrorism carried out on 9/11. They were preparing for threats such as the 1993 bombing of the World Trade Center and bombing in 2000 of the USS Cole.

Much of the intelligence community’s focus was on reactive law enforcement activity rather than proactive countering of terrorism. A telling quote from the 9/11 commission report focuses on the lack of a proactive response: “The process was meant, by its nature, to mark for the public as the events finished – case solved, justice done. It was not designed to ask if the events might be harbingers of worse to come. Nor did it allow for aggregating and analyzing facts to see if they could provide clues to terrorist tactics more generally – methods of entry and finance, and mode of operation inside the United States” (Commission Report, p. 73).

Bin Laden had amassed substantial power due to conditions in the Middle East as well as his charismatic leadership, and the US intelligence community was underprepared for a 9/11 style attack. In the aftermath of 9/11, these two factors continued to affect US policy in the Middle East, particularly in Iraq.

Aftermath

The immediate response to 9/11 was the George W. Bush administration’s War on Terror, which began in Afghanistan as a retaliation against al Qaeda for carrying out the attack. The Bush administration soon expanded the War on Terror into Iraq, and the consequences of these wars continue to affect the Middle East to this day. Almost 20 years later, the United States is still at war in both Afghanistan and Iraq.

There were domestic long-term effects of 9/11 as well. Thousands of people struggle with cancer and lasting chronic health problems relating to the toxicity from Ground Zero, the site where the Twin Towers used to stand. The September 11 attacks also changed American air travel as airlines began to require stringent security checks designed to prevent the types of weapons the hijackers used from slipping through.

Finally, the 9/11 attacks resulted in changes to the federal government and an expansion of executive power. A new cabinet department, the Department of Homeland Security, was created, and the intelligence community was consolidated under the Director of National Intelligence to improve coordination between various agencies and departments. New legislation such as the USA Patriot Act expanded domestic security and surveillance, disrupted terrorist funding by cracking down on activities such as money laundering, and increased efficiency within the U.S. intelligence community.

The tragedy of September 11, 2001 will never be forgotten, and the aftermath is still continuing to unfold. The 9/11 Memorial and Museum opened on the site of the former World Trade Center on September 11, 2011, and features reflecting pools in the footprints of where the Twin Towers once stood.

The prosecution presents basic evidence and may call witnesses, and the defense can cross-examine them, but it is not a full trial. Miller, who was 19 at the time of his arrest, led law enforcement on a 30-hour manhunt after he allegedly stabbed his parents. Strategic Corruption

A Useful Concept or a Catch-All?

In recent years, the term ‘strategic corruption’ has gained traction across policy, academic, and advocacy circles. Coined to describe the use of corrupt practices as deliberate instruments of foreign policy, the concept has come into focus particularly since the escalation of geopolitical rivalries following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Yet even as its usage has expanded, its precise meaning remains contested.

An expert workshop supported by the Independent Social Research Foundation (ISRF) and the University of Rijeka brought together scholars and practitioners to probe the concept’s boundaries, practical applications, and analytical utility. The discussions were rich, critical, and ultimately inconclusive—revealing just how much definitional and conceptual work remained to be done.

This blog post shares key insights from that workshop and draws on recent research, including my co-authored article with David Lewis in a special issue of Public Integrity (2025), to move toward a more grounded and precise understanding of what strategic corruption is—and what it is not.

What’s at Stake: Definitional Drift and Conceptual Uncertainty

The origin of the term ‘strategic corruption’ is closely linked to the securitisation of anti-corruption policy. An influential 2020 essay by Zelikow et al., ‘The Rise of Strategic Corruption: How States Weaponize Graft’, cast the practice as an intentional tool of authoritarian foreign policy. This framing, embraced by the Biden administration, elevated transnational corruption to a national security priority in the United States.

Yet this shift, while welcome in some operational respects, came with conceptual costs. ‘Strategic corruption’ became a catch-all label, applied not only to the use of bribery and illicit finance, but also to cybercrime, disinformation, opaque investment, and elite capture. Often, these disparate activities were bundled together without clearly establishing the linkages—or the corruption. As one workshop participant put it, this risks turning the term into an empty vessel: rhetorically powerful but analytically slippery.

The Cres workshop discussions highlighted several ambiguities that need to be addressed for the concept to retain value. First, what is really new about strategic corruption? Is it the novelty of tactic—or their combination? Or is it the geopolitical context in which they are deployed?

Second, does the term sufficiently clarify the actors and mechanisms involved? Several participants questioned whether the concept overstates the coherence of state strategies and underplays the role of private networks, commercial actors, and hybrid entities. If everything from state-owned banks to cyber operations counts as strategic corruption, where do we draw the line?

Third, how useful is the dichotomy between authoritarian and democratic systems in this debate? Some argued that it is central, pointing to how authoritarian regimes leverage corruption abroad to weaken democracies. Others noted that democracies, too, engage in or enable corrupt practices abroad, and that the ‘democracy vs. autocracy’ framing may obscure more than it reveals. This remark has now been made more poignant by the current 180-degree reversal on anti-corruption policy by the Trump administration.

These tensions are also reflected in the growing academic literature on the topic. In their recent article in Public Integrity, Pozsgai-Alvarez and Lang (2025) outline four main strands of how the concept is used: strategy-oriented (focused on intentionality and state agency), tool-oriented (emphasising the corrupt instruments), effect-oriented (outcomes such as institutional destabilisation), and structure-oriented (underlying geopolitical or systemic drivers). Yet even these categories sometimes overlap or conflict.

What Strategic Corruption Is

In our own Public Integrity article, David Lewis and I argue that what is often referred to as strategic corruption is better understood as a subtype of networked corruption, that is, corruption embedded in transnational networks, involving both state and non-state actors, and reliant on a combination of legal and illegal tools. Not all networked corruption is strategic, however. The distinguishing feature is intent.

Strategic corruption, in this framing, refers specifically to the intentional use of cross-border corrupt practices by state actors, or non-state actors working on their behalf, to advance geopolitical objectives. The first point is the already-mentioned intent: actions may be diffuse, indirect, or outsourced to intermediaries, but they are not accidental or incidental. Rather, they are part of a broader political strategy. Second, strategic corruption tends to involve some degree of state involvement or direction. While private actors may play key roles, the activities are typically aligned with, or facilitated by, state institutions or foreign policy aims. This distinguishes it from purely profit-driven corruption. Third, strategic corruption is defined by its targeted function: it seeks to weaken democratic institutions, undermine governance frameworks, or realign a state’s international orientation or assert hegemony. This may involve manipulating electoral systems, co-opting elites, using military and security assets, or fostering dependency through illicit financial ties. The point is not merely to extract value, but to reshape political outcomes in the target country. An important caveat is that while such practices are often illegal, they may also take forms that are formally legal yet illicit in intent and effect.

What Strategic Corruption Is Not

Strategic corruption is not simply large-scale or international in scope. It is not the same as kleptocracy, though the two may overlap. It is not driven solely by economic gain, nor is it the result of uncoordinated, opportunistic behaviour. Without evidence of deliberate political intent and state alignment, the use of corrupt practices—even if consequential—should not automatically be classified as strategic corruption.

Why Definitional Precision Matters

A clearer, narrower definition of strategic corruption is vital for both research and policy. Without it, the term risks becoming a catch-all for malign foreign influence, used to justify reactive or securitised anti-corruption responses. It may also obscure the role played by domestic actors and Western enablers in facilitating corrupt flows. At its worst, it can end up being little more than a phrase used in propaganda, or it could even be used to paint political enemies as traitors without evidence to back up accusations.

By focusing on intent, state involvement, and political targeting, we can distinguish strategic corruption from adjacent concepts and build a typology that allows for more robust analysis and potential evidencing. This will be particularly useful to any actors wishing to develop better, more effective responses to the threat.

This clarity also opens the door to comparative research: How do different states deploy strategic corruption? What tools do they favour, and under what conditions does it work? The Cres workshop showed that we are only at the beginning of understanding this phenomenon. Pinning down its meaning allows us to move past slogans and start asking harder questions about evidence, mechanisms, and impact. The discussion is far from over, but this post is a step toward sharpening the concept—and an invitation to others to carry it forward.

Troy Driver, Who Allegedly Kidnapped and Murdered Naomi Irion Last Month, was Denied Bail Today in a Nevada Courtroom

Troy Driver, 41, was rearraigned today in a Nevada courtroom, charged with murdering Naomi Irion, 18. Driver was arraigned late last month, accused of kidnapping Naomi from the Walmart parking lot in Fernley on 12 March around 5:30 am. Her body was found 17 days later, 150 miles away in Churchill County, home to Driver for many years. He met with his defence attorney for one hour yesterday, Richard Davies. Lead attorney Davies, who reportedly specialises in criminal defence, did not object when Driver was denied bail. He says his client is innocent, revealing that the defence will conduct its own investigation into the matter. Driver was originally represented by public defender Mario Walther; both he and Davies will work on Driver's defence.

Driver stands accused of murder with the use of a deadly weapon, and felony charges of kidnapping, robbery, burglary and destruction of evidence. An amended complaint filed Tuesday alleges that Driver kidnapped Naomi specifically "for the purpose of committing sexual assault, extortion, or robbery upon or from the person of killing the person or inflicting substantial bodily harm."

Driver is presumed innocent until proven guilty under the law. He has a violent criminal past, committing several felonies as a teenager in his home state of California, all involving firearms. A burglar in his mid-teens, Driver stole firearms. He held up a convenience store and petrol stations at gunpoint. (As it so happens, Naomi was shot in the head and chest.) And Driver, aged 17, was an accessory both before and after the fact in the murder of methamphetamine dealer Paul Rodriguez in 1997. Pleading guilty to accessory after the fact and the other charges (burglary and armed robbery), he served 15 years in state prison before moving to Nevada in 2012, working steadily for construction companies in a supervisory capacity, most recently for Ledcor. Biblical Insights, Geographical Parables #6: The Brook Kidron, A Portrait of Hell

The Brook Kidron runs south along the eastern edge of Jerusalem all the way down to the Dead Sea

Introduction

The Brook Kidron is a relatively insignificant geographical feature that runs south between the eastern wall of Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives and begins near the Garden of Gethsemane. While topographically it does not appear to be very significant, it nonetheless has great Biblical significance as this study will show. The Brook Kidron is another example of a Geographical Parable that God provides in the Bible. A Geographical Parable is a real “earthly” physical place, which serves to represent a real “spiritual” place and convey a “spiritual” meaning.

The Brook Kidron is mentioned several times in the Bible, but, in each case, it provides us with a consistent theme. The theme is that the Brook Kidron is used by God in the Bible as a “typological” of “allegorical” reference to “Hell”. Can this claim be documented and proven? Indeed it can!

Taking a Closer Look… at the Kidron Brook (Valley)

The Setting of the Brook (נַחַל (naḥal))H5158 Kidron (קִדְרוֹן (qiḏrôn))H6939

The Brook Kidron is the name of a seasonal stream and valley, technically only now a wadi, as water runs through it only after heavy rains, although in Biblical times likely was also fed by springs, notably the Gihon spring (please see the above map). The brook’s course runs down along the eastern flank of Jerusalem beginning near the Garden of Gethsemane and flowing down through a valley of Kidron, with the Mount of Olives on the east, and ultimately continuing all the way into the “Dead Sea” (otherwise known as the “Salt Sea”).

Kidron Ominously Means “Darkness“

The name “Kidron” (“Cedron” in the Greek New Testament) in the original Hebrew is קִדְרוֹן (qiḏrôn)H6939 meaning “dark“, but not just any dark, it means “turbid”or “murky” and “very black” and “full of darkness“.

Kidron is derived from the root word, קָדַר (qāḏar)H6937 , which in the original Hebrew is most often translated as “mourn” and “black” as in “sackcloth.” So we should first take a closer look at the meaning and use of the root word for “Kidron” as we find in Ezekiel 32:7&8, where God is condemning Pharaoh and Egypt to hell within the context of the entire chapter we read, “And when I shall put thee out, I will cover the heaven, and make (קָדַר (qāḏar))H6937 ➔ the stars thereof dark (קָדַר (qāḏar)) H6937; I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give her light. All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark (קָדַר (qāḏar))H6937 over thee, and set darkness (חֹשֶׁךְ (ḥōšeḵ))H2822 upon thy land, saith the Lord GOD.“ What is particularly noteworthy here is that God uses two different words for “dark” and “darkness” together, as synonyms, to convey the same meaning.

We can also see this correlation when we look at the use of these two words when we compare Joel 2:10, “The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark (קָדַר (qāḏar)) H6937, and the stars shall withdraw their shining:” with Isaiah 13:10, “For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened (חָשַׁךְ (ḥāšaḵ))H2821 in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.“ The Hebrew word חָשַׁךְ (ḥāšaḵ))H2821 meaning “to be, or become, dark” or “darkened” and is is the root word for חֹשֶׁךְ (ḥōšeḵ)H2822, meaning “darkness“.

We should therefore also note that the word חֹשֶׁךְ (ḥōšeḵ)H2822 is found in a total of 80 instances in the Bible in a consistently ominous way as this example in Job 17:13 shows, “If I wait, the grave (actually “Hell”) [is] mine house: I have made my bed in the darkness (חֹשֶׁךְ (ḥōšeḵ))H2822.“

It is also notable that while the “Brook Kidron” is not mentioned in the Book of Job explicitly, it is nonetheless implicitly mentioned in Job 6:15&17, where we can see another connection between the words “brook” and the same root word for “Kidron”, “My brethren have dealt deceitfully as a brook (נַחַל (naḥal))H5158, [and] as the stream of brooks (נַחַל (naḥal))H5158 they pass away; Which are blackish (קָדַר (qāḏar))H6937 by reason of the ice, [and] wherein the snow is hid:“

Jesus Compared Hell to “Outer Darkness”

These three verses, quoting Jesus, make a very clear connection between Kidron (“darkness”) and Hell:

Matthew 8:12, “But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.”

Matthew 22:13, “Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast [him] into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.“

Matthew 25:30, “And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.“

Finally, the last reference in the Bible where the sun and the moon and the stars are described as being darkened can be found in Revelation 8:12, where we read, “And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.“ Clearly this is a case where judgment has come into view (and given the number one third it is likely coming upon the corporate church in the Final Tribulation).

Mentions of the Brook Kidron in the Bible

The Brook Kidron is mentioned directly only 11 times in the Bible, but is also alluded to at least two more times as we will see, but in each case there is an unequivocal association with sorrow, death, and judgment. The above ontology of the Hebrew words connected with “Kidron” are at least suggestive that the Brook Kidron might be a reference to Hell in the Bible.

King David “Passed Over the Brook Kidron“

The first direct reference to the Brook Kidron is found in 2 Samuel 15:23, where we read how King David fled Jerusalem with some faithful servants and his household during Absalom’s rebellion, “And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over: the king also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the wilderness.” This is a prefigurement of Jesus, being pursued by His enemy (the devil, like David was pursued by Absalom) having to go through Hell to atone for sin on behalf of His own faithful servants and household.

This traumatic event was also accompanied shortly thereafter by a verbal cursing and “casting stones” assault by a man named Shimei (meaning “renowned“). According to 2 Samuel 16:5-24, Shimei was a Benjamite, the son of Gera (meaning “a grain“), of the village of Bahurim (meaning “young men’s village“), and perhaps most significantly, he was also a man of the family of the house of former king Saul. Later, when King David crossed the River Jordan on his way back to regain his throne in Jerusalem after Absalom died in battle, Shimei begged for, and was granted, King David’s forgiveness.

Before we move on the reader should be aware of the significance of Shimei casting stones at King David 2 Samuel 16:6-13, “And he cast stones at David,…” This happened after King David passed over the Brook Kidron with his faithful servants and it correlates well with Jesus going forth over the Brook Kidron (Cedron in Greek) to the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus went a “stone’s cast” from his disciples. Please see below under the heading of “A Stone’s Cast“.

The “Valley of the Shadow of Death“

Later, we read in 1 Kings 2:8&9, King David, when nearing his death, instructed Solomon, his son and heir, to ultimately bring Shimei into account such that Shimei would not live to a normal old age. Upon the death of King David, when Solomon ascended the throne of Israel, in 1 Kings 2:36-46, we see the Brook Kidron highlighted in a crucial role involving the ultimate fate of Shimei in fulfillment of King David’s instruction. King Solomon warned Shimei that if he wanted to remain alive, then Shimei had to remain confined within Jerusalem and to never pass over the Brook Kidron, otherwise, according to 1 Kings 2:37, King Solomon told Shimei, “For it shall be, [that] on the day thou goest out, and passest over the brook Kidron, thou shalt know for certain that thou shalt surely die: thy blood shall be upon thine own head.“

Although Shimei promised King Solomon that he would remain in Jerusalem, we read next in 1 Kings 2:39, “¶And it came to pass at the end of three years,…“, that, in an effort to retrieve two of his servants who had run away to Gath (which is west of Jerusalem in what was then Philistine, while the Brook Kidron is east), Shimei left his Jerusalem confinement in violation of his word to Solomon (which in all likelihood involved his having crossed over the Brook Kidron). When Shimei’s movement was made known to Solomon, Shimei was put to death in 1 Kings 2:46.

The Brook Kidron Is a Place for Destroyed and Burned Idols and Altars

King Asa and the Brook Kidron

In the Book of 1 Kings, we learn how Asa, King of Judah of the line of King David, removed idols and in particular he dethroned his own mother, and destroyed her idol and burned it by the Brook Kidron. We see this in 1 Kings 15:11-13, “And Asa did [that which was] right in the eyes of the LORD, as [did] David his father. And he took away the sodomites out of the land, and removed all the idols that his fathers had made. And also Maachah his mother, even her he removed from [being] queen, because she had made an idol in a grove; and Asa destroyed her idol, and burnt it by the brook Kidron.” This information is repeated in 2 Chronicles 15:16, “And also [concerning] Maachah the mother of Asa the king, he removed her from [being] queen, because she had made an idol in a grove: and Asa cut down her idol, and stamped [it], and burnt [it] at the brook Kidron.“

King Josiah and the Brook Kidron

In 2 Kings 23:1-3, we read where King Josiah gathered all the people of Judah and Jerusalem to hear the Words of God and to renew their commitment to obeying God, “¶And the king sent, and they gathered unto him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem. And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of the LORD. And the king stood by a pillar, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all [their] heart and all [their] soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant.“

Immediately thereafter we see that King Josiah orders the destruction of all idolatry related articles to be burned at the Brook Kidron and the ashes scattered over graves in the valley of the Brook Kidron.

In 2 Kings 23:4-6, “And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple of the LORD all the vessels that were made for Baal, and for the grove, and for all the host of heaven: and he burned them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them unto Bethel. And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven. And he brought out the grove from the house of the LORD, without Jerusalem, unto the brook Kidron, and burned it at the brook Kidron, and stamped [it] small to powder, and cast the powder thereof upon the graves of the children of the people.“ So we can also deduce that, in the time of Josiah, the Valley of Kidron served as a cemetery.

King Josiah took similar action with the altars to false gods in 2 Kings 23:12, “And the altars that [were] on the top of the upper chamber of Ahaz, which the kings of Judah had made, and the altars which Manasseh had made in the two courts of the house of the LORD, did the king beat down, and brake [them] down from thence, and cast the dust of them into the brook Kidron.

King Hezekiah and the Brook Kidron

King Hezekiah also ordered the Levites to cleanse the temple of idolatrous materials and carry them to the Brook Kidron as we read in 2 Chronicles 29:16, “And the priests went into the inner part of the house of the LORD, to cleanse [it], and brought out all the uncleanness that they found in the temple of the LORD into the court of the house of the LORD. And the Levites took [it], to carry [it] out abroad into the brook Kidron.” And then again, we read in 2 Chronicles 30:13&14, that also under King Hezekiah…”¶And there assembled at Jerusalem much people to keep the feast of unleavened bread in the second month, a very great congregation. And they arose and took away the altars that were in Jerusalem, and all the altars for incense took they away, and cast [them] into the brook Kidron.“

The last Old Testament direct reference to the Brook Kidron is in Jeremiah 31:40, “And the whole valley of the dead bodies, and of the ashes, and all the fields unto the brook of Kidron, unto the corner of the horse gate toward the east, [shall be] holy unto the LORD; it shall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more for ever.” The context seems suggest that once Judgment Day comes and there is the New Jerusalem created, then the place representing by the Brook Kidron and its contents will remain for ever and be considered holy by God. Judgment Day, with the torment in Hell that will follow forever, God likens to a “sacrifice” as indicated by Isaiah 34:6, Jeremiah 46:10, Ezekiel 39:17, Zephaniah 1:7&8 and Revelation 14:11.

Indirect References to the Brook Kidron (Both Nehemiah and Jesus went by there)

There are two other instances that the Brook Kidron is mentioned in the Bible, but those are indirect. It is mentioned one time as the “valley” and the other time as the “brook”, as is translated in English from the original Hebrew word, נַחַל (naḥal)H5158. In 2 Chronicles 33:14, we read “¶Now after this he built a wall without the city of David, on the west side of Gihon, in the valley H5158, even to the entering in at the fish gate, and compassed about Ophel, and raised it up a very great height, and put captains of war in all the fenced cities of Judah.” The geographical context (the Gihon spring is in the Kidron valley) indicates it can only be referring to the Brook Kidron. Then in Nehemiah 2:15, “Then went I up in the night by the brookH5158, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and so returned.“ Again, when we look at the setting and geographical context, it is also clear that the “brook” can only be referring to the Brook Kidron.

Nehemiah and the Brook Kidron

The second time where the Brook Kidron is mentioned indirectly, as described above, is of particular interest, because it has to do with Nehemiah and his three days and three nights sojourn outside the walls of Jerusalem that we read about in Nehemiah chapter 2. The significance and spiritual implications are profound, because Nehemiah’s activities, as are described in Chapter 2, clearly point to the Person and Work of the Lord Jesus Christ (and which are more fully explained in this other post on Nehemiah, Chapter 2).

Jesus and the Brook Kidron (on His way to the Garden of Gethsemane)

Jesus must have crossed the Valley of Kidron many times in His travels, but only one time is such a crossing specifically mentioned in the Bible. We should all be aware that the Garden of Gethsemane is just east of Jerusalem at the base of the Mount of Olives by the uppermost part of the valley of the Brook Kidron (see map above), and this is where Jesus’ Atonement began on Passover evening/night as we read in John 18:1, ”When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth with his disciples over the brook Cedron (“Cedron” is Kidron in Greek), where was a garden (Gethsemane), into the which he entered, and his disciples.”

The account of Jesus suffering in the Garden of Gethsemane can be also be found in three other places in the Bible, in Matthew 26:36–46, Mark 14:32–42, Luke 22:39–46. From those three descriptions, we learn that Jesus was in the Garden with the disciples, then Jesus told them to remain, while He went further with Peter, James, and John, and then, alone, a bit farther.

In the Garden of Gethsemane, after Jesus had separated Himself from His disciples “about a stone’s cast” as we read in Luke 22:41 “¶And he (Jesus) was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,“) and Jesus prayed three times (Matthew 26:44 and e.g., Luke 22:42, “Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.”) The “cup” was the cup of God’s wrath that Jesus had to take in penalty for the sins of God’s elect. Remember also shortly afterward where Jesus reprimanded Peter for trying to protect Him in John 18:11, “Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?” Moreover we know that the Garden was where the agony of the Atonement had begun because we read in Luke 22:44, “And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.”

A Stone’s Cast?

The significance of Luke 22:41 should not be missed by the reader. “And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,” The language of “a stone’s cast” is extremely important because the casting of stones has great significance in the Bible. It is used to condemn someone to death in the Bible.

The reality is that Jesus was condemned to death on the behalf of all those who would believe on Him as their Lord God and Savior. Any sin is sufficient to justify death by stoning, not just blasphemy against God, or murder. Remember that in Numbers 15:32-36, we read of a man who gathered sticks on the Sabbath was subsequently taken outside of the camp and stoned to death by God’s command to Moses.

More significantly, there is another case that we should all be aware of regarding “stoning”. In Deuteronomy 21:18 we read, “If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and [that], when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; [he is] a glutton, and a drunkard. And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.¶ And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree: His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day; (for he that is hanged [is] accursed of God), that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee [for] an inheritance.”

We should all remember that Jesus was accused, falsely, of being a glutton and a drunkard in Luke 7:34, “The Son of man is come eating and drinking; and ye say, Behold a gluttonous man, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners!” And following Jesus’s Passion in the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus was spiritually deemed to have been worthy of stoning on behalf of the elect, Jesus hung on the cross on that same Passover day, and that cross, being hewn of wood, served as a “tree” as we read in Galatians 3:13 , “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed [is] every one that hangeth on a tree:” And Jesus’s body was buried before sun down that day in the Tomb of Joseph of Arimathaea as recorded in Matthew 27:57-60.

The mention of “a stone’s cast” was placed there by God to show that Jesus had at that point come under judgment for the sins of God’s elect. 2 Corinthians 5:21 makes clear that, “For he hath made him [to be] sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.“ and also 1 John 3:5, “And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.“

Jesus was subsequently tormented in every way until His death on the cross, that occurred just outside the walls of Jerusalem on Friday afternoon (the ninth hour, or 3:00 p.m.). Then Jesus’s body was buried in the tomb and remained there, Friday night (the second night) through Saturday (the sabbath day and the second day), through Saturday night until the resurrection early Sunday morning, which marked the third day.

Conclusion

Again, for review, Kidron (קִדְרוֹן (qiḏrôn)) H6939 means “Very Black, Full of Darkness”. Jesus describes Hell three times as “‘outer darkness'”: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” (Matthew 8:12, Mat 22:13, Matthew 25:30). And remember that king David, when was fleeing from Absalom and leaving Jerusalem, also crossed over the brook Kidron. Moreover, we also read of the people “weeping” in 2 Samuel 15:23, “And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over: the king also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the wilderness.“

So then, Spiritually, the Brook Kidron has to be considered representative of the eternal fires of Hell, as the Brook Kidron is where all the refuse was dumped and continually burned from the ancient city of Jerusalem, and which notably empties into the “Dead” Sea. It is mentioned explicitly in eleven verses in the Bible (ten in the Old Testament and one in the New Testament), and in each and every time, in some form or another, the Brook Kidron serves as a picture of Hell. This is because the brook Kidron was where all the false idols were broken, stamped to powder, and then burned (e.g. 1Kings 15:13, 2 Kings 23:6, 2 Kings 23:12 and 2 Chronicles 15:16), and also to where the priests, the Levites, carried out all of the uncleannesses out of the Temple (2 Chronicles 29:16). The Kidron valley is also associated with “dead bodies” and “ashes”, as we read in Jeremiah 31:40 where God declared, “And the whole valley of the dead bodies, and of the ashes, and all the fields unto the brook of Kidron, unto the corner of the horse gate toward the east, [shall be] holy unto the LORD; it shall not be plucked up, nor thrown down any more for ever.”

It is also interesting how the Brook Kidron relates to Judgment Day, because 1) Jesus went there first for His people, but 2) second Jesus will come there again as the Judge of all the rest: Psalm 110:5-7, “The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath. He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill [the places] with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries. He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up the head.“

The bottom line is that the Kidron valley, the valley of the Brook Kidron, is an abominable place where the dust and ashes of false idols belong and an indisputable allegorical picture of the darkness and awfulness of Hell. We can see that the two “Types” of the Lord Jesus Christ: King David and Nehemiah, each had to each pass over the Brook Kidron in difficult circumstances, and each in there own way pointed to Jesus’ Atoning Sacrifice that became reality on Passover evening in 33AD when Jesus went over the Brook Kidron to the Garden of Gethsemane where Jesus’s suffering began. Jonah, another great “Type” of the Lord Jesus Christ, was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale foretelling the agony of Jesus who spent the equivalent of an eternity in Hell in the space of the same time span of three days and three nights(Thursday evening to Sunday morning), outside the gates of Jerusalem, and beginning in the Garden of Gethsemane. But the Good News is that we know that Jesus also arose from the dead, and that His resurrection proved that the full payment for the sins of His elect had been paid, and therefore Jesus (just as He was prefigured by both king David and Nehemiah) “returned“! Hallelujah!

Today’s Application: Are You Ready?

The Bible makes it clear that if God was willing to put His own Son through Hell to save a people for Himself, how much more would He be willing to send the wicked who reject Him to Hell for their sins (please see Romans 8:32). Jesus is the only Way of escape from the just penalty for our sins. All other ways that man can devise will lead only to Hell. Have you made peace with God through Jesus Christ? After law school, I clerked for the Hon. Connie Steinheimer in the Second Judicial District Court of Nevada. I assisted the Judge with civil and criminal cases. My tasks included writing bench memos, drafting orders, and writing jury instructions. Working for Judge Steinheimer was a great honor and I learned so much from her in my short time as her clerk.

I previously worked for the Nevada Attorney General’s Office prosecuting domestic violence and sexual assault crimes in Churchill and Lyon counties under the ICJR Grant. Crimes of domestic violence and sexual assault are crimes that the law punishes very severely, but for many reasons can be difficult to prosecute. The challenges presented by these crimes have been wonderful learning experiences.
