ROME (AP) — Pope Leo XIV opened the church’s penitential Lenten season by presiding over Ash Wednesday and lamenting the “ashes of international law and justice” that have been left by today’s wars and conflicts.

Instead, it was Sheriff Brad Pope and district attorney Steve Rye who declared Driver’s guilt at a press conference Wednesday morning at the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office in Yerington.

“The evidence in this case of guilt of Troy Driver in the kidnapping, sexual assault, and murder of Naomi Irion is overwhelming. There was nobody else involved,” Rye said. “We, like the sheriff’s office, wanted to see justice for Naomi and her family with a guilty verdict and death sentence for Troy Driver. Unfortunately, that will not happen in this case. However, it is important that the family know about what happened to Naomi and what Driver did to her.”

Pope opened the press conference by providing a detailed timeline of Driver’s time in the Lyon County jail after his arrest on March 25, 2022. Pope said that on March 31, Driver refused mental health services from Lyon County’s Forensic Assessment Service Team. On Aug. 18, 2022, detectives were made aware of what they called a confession letter and suicide note written by Driver. On Aug. 20, 2022, Driver attempted suicide by trying to hang himself from his cell block, but that attempt was observed by jail staff, who provided immediate medical attention.

Driver was treated at a hospital, and then placed in an isolation cell and placed on suicide watch. However, Driver met with medical health professionals several times and denied being suicidal and was eventually moved out of isolation and into a maximum-security cell. Pope said that on March 7, Driver attempted suicide again by slashing his wrists, but again that attempt was observed by jail staff and Driver received immediate medical attention. Pope said that in a meeting with a psych nurse four days later, Driver denied that he was suicidal and said he fell on a shampoo bottle.

He was placed back in an isolation cell, but in April he told a psych nurse that he was frustrated being in an isolation cell and claimed sleep deprivation from the constant checks by deputies.

On June 3 he was discharged from isolation and on June 4 he was placed back in a maximum-security cell.

Pope said from June 4 to August 6, Driver showed no signs of depression, crisis or suicidal intentions. But on August 6, after Driver was seen by a deputy drinking water in his cell at 5:22 p.m. a deputy found him hanging in his cell at 6:17 p.m. Driver was found unresponsive and efforts to revive him failed. He was pronounced dead at 6:49 p.m.

“The evidence is insurmountable that he was the perpetrator of this despicable act, and he is dead,” Pope said. “He continually chose the path of a coward and ended his life with a cowardly act. I know this is not the closure the family or law enforcement wanted or anticipated. I empathize with them; however, I do not have any empathy for the damned soul of Troy Driver.”

Following Pope’s comments, Detective Lt. Tyrell Joyner presented a video timeline of the investigation, which was narrated by Joyner.

“After Troy Driver committed suicide, we knew that the case should not die with Driver and that the truth of his guilt needed to be told,” Joyner said.

The video began with surveillance video from Walmart, where Irion arrived at the east side of the parking lot at 5:09 a.m. in her Mercury Sable. Irion worked at Panasonic in the Tahoe Reno Industrial Center and rode a shuttle bus to work from the Walmart parking lot.

The video showed the suspect stalking Irion’s car, then approaching the driver’s side of the car from behind. A few seconds later, the car backs out of the parking spot and drives away.

The car was found on March 15 in a dirt lot on the east side of Duffy Rd. between Lowe’s and Sherwin Williams.

It was Irion’s brother, Casey Valley, who alerted the sheriff’s office to the surveillance video after he went to Walmart when she didn’t return and asked to see the surveillance video to see if she had shown up to catch the bus to work. Deputies then began scouring surveillance video from several businesses around Walmart and on Stanley Drive.

That’s where they saw that on March 12 at 3:31 p.m., about 10 hours after the kidnapping, Irion’s car is seen on video driving south on Duffy Rd. and is parked on a dirt lot on the east side of Duffy Rd. An unknown suspect is seen walking away from her car and walking southbound on Duffy Rd. At 4:12 p.m., a grayish-blue truck was seen on video driving on Duffy Rd. and parking near Irion’s car. The driver parked near the car and walked from the truck to the car, moved the car to a different dirt lot, and then left in the truck.

Detectives took screenshots of the truck to multiple Chevrolet dealerships in the area, where it was identified as a 2020 to 2022 Chevrolet High Country 2500 or 3500 model, metallic blue or metallic gray in color with several other distinguishing features. Detectives then got a list of all of the registered models of that truck in the western Nevada area and began to attempt to locate each of them with a similar color.

Joyner said detectives learned of one particular truck registered to an address in Silver Springs, and they became suspicious when they saw that address had numerous broke down, damaged, and haphazardly parked vehicles, which he said was not consistent with what detectives observed from other owners of the same model truck. They found that the owner of that truck was Troy Edward Driver.

When they looked into Driver’s background, they found that he matched the physical description of the suspect on surveillance video, that he was the suspect in a sexual assault in Elko in 2021, and that he had an extensive criminal history. At the age of 17 he was involved in a robbery and homicide in California. He was tried as an adult and sentenced to 15 years in prison. He moved to Nevada when he was released from prison in 2012. He completed Parole and Probation in 2015. They found that he was living in Fallon and working as a supervisor for Ledcor, a mining exploration company.

“Driver’s truck was the first truck on the DMV list to match the suspect vehicle point for point,” Joyner said.

While detectives were trying to track down the truck, other detectives were scouring additional surveillance video, and they found video of the suspect’s truck arriving in the area of Walmart at 4:22 a.m. March 12, nearly an hour before Irion arrived. The truck was parked on a dirt lot on the south side of the Walmart parking lot, between Wells Fargo and Greater Nevada Credit Union.

On the afternoon of March 12, after the suspect walked southbound away from Irion’s car, detectives were able to piece together his movements by combining different video surveillance of the area, which showed the suspect walk from Irion’s car to the truck parked in the dirt lot south of Walmart. He walked across Stanley Drive near Greater Nevada Credit Union, where he walked past a surveillance camera that gave a clear view of his face, and the detectives working on finding the truck recognized him as Troy Driver. The surveillance footage confirmed that the truck had not been moved since being parked in the dirt lot at 4:22 a.m. After returning to his truck, the suspect returned to Irion’s car and moved it.

Joyner said that after positively identifying Driver as the person walking away from Irion’s car, detectives believed probable cause existed that Driver was responsible for the kidnapping. On March 25, Driver was arrested and booked into the Lyon County Jail. He refused to speak with detectives.

Simultaneous to his arrest, detectives also served a search warrant on his home in Fallon and seized his truck as evidence. Detectives immediately noticed the truck had brand new tires. Detectives found that Driver had replaced his tires on March 19, which was after LCSO had released the surveillance photos of the truck to the media. He had replaced the tires at a Les Schwab in Winnemucca. Joyner said detectives believe he replaced the tires in Winnemucca rather than in Fallon because of local media coverage, in fear of drawing attention to himself. Detectives were able to recover the original tires from Les Schwab in Winnemucca.

After Driver was arrested and his name was released to the media, law enforcement began to receive tips about Driver. The Pershing County Sheriff’s Office received a tip that in February of 2022, a semi-truck hauling an excavator had been trying to deliver the excavator to Troy Driver at the Relief Canyon Mine outside of Lovelock for a Ledcor operation. The employee who spoke to the delivery driver called Troy Driver, who asked that the excavator be delivered to the Buena Vista Iron Mine, about 15 miles south of the Relief Canyon Mine. The Buena Vista Iron Mine is an abandoned mine located in a remote area southeast of Lovelock, in the northern part of Churchill County.

In February, Ledcor had been hired to dig samples at the mine site, which is why Driver had been there waiting for the delivery of the excavator. After receiving that tip, a PCSO sergeant drove to the mine site, where he found freshly turned-over dirt on the north side of the mine that did not seem consistent with mining. On March 28, the PCSO sergeant passed the information to detectives in Churchill and Lyon.

The next day, detectives from Churchill and Lyon Counties responded to the mine site and found freshly dug dirt mounded into the shape of a grave. It had rocks scattered around the top to make it appear natural. Detectives began to dig and discovered that it was a grave site.

With the assistance of forensic technicians from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, detectives exhumed the grave and found Irion buried approximately 4-5 feet deep, with two gunshot wounds. Joyner said the evidence showed that she had been shot in the head outside of the grave, then she was dragged into the grave and shot in the chest.

Joyner said evidence indicated the grave had been dug by an excavator. Tire impressions from both Irion’s car and the tires from Driver’s truck recovered from the Winnemucca Les Schawb were found at the mine site.

Driver’s girlfriend told detectives that he had gone camping on the weekend of March 12 and had left his cell phones at home. He had left their house on the evening of March 11 and returned on the night of March 12. Joyner said Driver’s girlfriend also said he was infatuated with serial killers and was constantly reading books or listening to podcasts about serial killers and had recently been questioning his girlfriend’s daughter about the shuttle bus to Panasonic and Tesla, such as about the stops and how many people ride the bus.

She also confirmed that Driver had operated an excavator at the Buena Vista Iron Mine on February 22 and even provided a picture of the excavator from a text message that Driver had sent her. Detectives also confirmed with Ledcor that Driver had been working at the Buena Vista Iron Mine that day, digging sample holes on the southern boundary of the mine.

Joyner said evidence showed that when the other employees working at the mine that day left, Driver had used the excavator to dig a grave on the north side of the mine site, a long distance from the sample holes, which showed the grave was dug with premeditation almost a month before the crime.

Joyner said detectives believe Driver left home on March 11 and drove his truck to the Buena Vista Iron Mine, where he had the location of the kill site planned with a pre-dug grave site, to make sure the mine was still abandoned and to make final preparations. He said the mine site was gated and locked, but Driver had access to the combination lock from recent work at the mine. Then during the early morning hours of March 12, he drove to the Fernley Walmart.

“Driver picked a kidnap location that was dark and secluded, that had a high possibility of locating a single young woman, alone in a vehicle,” Joyner said.

Joyner said Driver approached the car and likely brandished a firearm to quickly gain control of Irion. He then broke and disabled her cell phone and drove Irion in her car to the Buena Vista Iron Mine, which is approximately 90 minutes from Fernley. After the killing, Driver burned Naomi’s clothing and some of his own. He then returned in her car to Fernley, where he parked it, walked back to his truck, and left the area.

In June of 2022, DNA results taken from Irion as part of the autopsy and sexual assault examination were confirmed as a match to DNA taken from Driver.

Joyner said the investigation did not reveal any previous connection between Driver and Irion. Driver seemed to confirm that in the suicide note detectives recovered on Aug. 18, 2022.

The letter was smuggled out of the jail in a deck of playing cards and was hand-delivered to Driver’s ex-girlfriend, by an inmate who had been released from custody. Driver’s ex-girlfriend immediately turned over the note to law enforcement. Joyner read excerpts from the note, where Driver wrote “There has always been a terrible darkness inside of me,” and “The guilt is crushing. I didn’t know anything about her until too late.” The note also stated that Driver intended on killing himself rather than exposing his loved ones to what he had done.

Joyner said Driver’s suicide was as extensively and carefully planned as the kidnapping and murder.

“Driver kept meticulous notes on day-to-day activities within the jail and committed suicide in a narrow window of time when he was not observed,” he said.

Rye also addressed the motion to dismiss filed by Driver’s attorneys in an attempt to change the trial venue to Churchill County by saying his office is certain the appropriate jurisdiction to try the case was Lyon County

“Driver started his brutal crime spree in Lyon County and he finished in Lyon County,” Rye said. “Naomi lived in Lyon County and the community most impacted by this case was Fernley in Lyon County.”

In addition, Rye said that even if a change of venue had been granted, the Churchill County district attorney’s office would have continued the prosecution and sought the death penalty for Troy Driver.

Rye closed his comments by paying special tribute to Naomi.

“There is evil in this world and Troy Driver reflects that evil,” he said. “But there is also hope, and Naomi reflects that.

Valley, who was at Wednesday’s press conference, said he watched the video summation of the investigation with Pope and Rye on Monday.

“I didn’t know that they had literally gotten his face on camera like that, that was new to me, and some of the details of the letter were new to me,” he said. “Other than that, I knew most of it.”

Valley said he has no question that Driver was the person who killed his sister.

“I would feel better if he had been convicted by a jury,” he said. “I’m no lawyer or anything, but with that level of evidence, I don’t see how anybody could have fought that.”

Now that the case is over, even though it wasn’t the ending they were hoping for, Valley said he believes that Naomi would want her family to live their lives.

“Definitely anytime I have interactions with people I wouldn’t normally interact with, I just think about what Naomi would think about or do in that situation,” he said. “She was just such a kind and loving person, that she’s kind of a guiding light in a lot of ways. I hope I can reflect that.”

FOR THE LORD’S PORTION IS HIS PEOPLE [the Lord’s one-third]; Jacob [his name was changed to Israel] is the place of His inheritance.” Deuteronomy 32:8-9 There is something about this division here. Do you see how the math is calling to be DIVIDED? Let me show you in Scripture why that is: “Do you suppose that I came to give peace on earth? I tell you, not at all, but rather DIVISION. For from now on five in one house will be DIVIDED: THREE AGAINST TWO, AND TWO AGAINST THREE.” Luke 12:51-52 Jesus has come to DIVIDE. Notice what specifically Jesus is dividing!! TWO-THIRDS!!! 2 divided by 3 = 66.6% Yeah, but… How are they divided? I will show you how using scripture. See this scripture: “Since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you, and to give YOU WHO ARE TROUBLED [God’s one-third] rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on THOSE WHO DO NOT KNOW GOD [these are the unbelievers and they are one-third of the devil’s two-thirds], and on THOSE WHO DO NOT OBEY THE GOSPEL OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST [these are the Lukewarm believer who will say Lord-Lord, the other one-third of the devil’s two-thirds, who know God’s Word/Jesus, but do not obey it by living according to the Spirit]. These [two-thirds -the devil’s portion] shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power, when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe [God’s one-third], because our testimony among you was believed.” 2 Thessalonians 1:6-10

Why did God sow less than the Devil? Why did the Devil sow more? Because God can do a lot with a few. It’s just like seeds (that’s why He only needs faith the size of a mustard seeds). God can plant a few seeds, and those seeds will grow fruit trees with hundreds of fruits on them, and those fruits will have seeds in them that can be planted in the ground to grow more trees & grow more fruit. God can multiply with just a few. It’s like math. If I plant 3 seeds, and they produce 3 trees (notice how I reaped what I sowed meaning 3 seeds reaped 3 trees). And say those 3 trees had on them 3 fruit each (3 x 3), then that is 9 fruit. Take the seeds from those 9 fruit and plant them in the ground, and they produce 9 more trees with 3 fruit each (9 x 3), then that is 27 fruit. God said in Genesis that this was good, and that everything He made like that, in a way that it could reproduce itself, (including food, animals, & man who can reproduce himself & make his own family tree), according to God was good! That is the basis of reaping and sowing seeds, remembering that it is God alone who gives the increase (1 Corinthians 3:6-7). Since only God can give the Increase, that means that only God can multiply. The Devil can’t multiply. So the only way he can get more is to sow more.

So, God sowed few (one-third), the devil sowed many (two-thirds). Now, here is an example in the Bible of God reaping FEW, and the devil reaping MANY: “Enter the narrow gate; for wide is the gate, and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are MANY who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are FEW who find it. Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.” Matthew 7:13-15 Notice how that scripture mentioned false prophets. That’s because God uses few prophets, while the devil uses many, and God wanted us to be aware that the devil has many! See the scripture: “Then Elijah said to the people, “I alone am left a prophet of the LORD; but Baal’s prophets are four hundred and fifty men.” 1 Kings 18:22 Ok, So… WHY DID GOD CHOOSE ONE-THIRD INSTEAD OF ANY OTHER FRACTION? WHY DID HE SOW ONLY ONE-THIRD? THE FEW? WHAT DO THE NUMBERS MEAN?… LOOK AT IT LIKE THIS… LOOK AT THE NUMBERS SEPARATELY… ONE… THIRD… BECAUSE THE THREE ARE ONE… FATHER, SON, HOLY SPIRIT. All who have the Holy Spirit become one with the Father and the Son. Scripture: “There is ONE BODY and ONE SPIRIT, just as you were called in ONE hope of your calling.” Ephesians 4:4 Scripture: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:19 Scripture: “Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him AND MAKE OUR HOME WITH HIM [become one with him].” John 14:23 Scripture: “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth [Holy Spirit] who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.” John 15:26-27 Scripture: “Therefore let that [the Holy Spirit] abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father.” 1 John 2:24 To abide means to dwell in & be ONE with the Father & the Son, which is why Jesus says They’ll make Their Home with those who let the Holy Spirit abide in them. And He says we’ve been with Him from the beginning because it’s the Holy Spirit in us that’s been with Him from the beginning. And the Holy Spirit is our seal, which is how Jesus will be able to identify us as God’s one-third. Scripture: “Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has ANOINTED US is God, who also has SEALED US and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a GUARANTEE [only if we continue to walk in the Spirit].” 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 Scripture: “In Him you also trusted, after you heard the WORD OF TRUTH [Sword], the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the GUARANTEE of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.” Ephesians 1:13-15 Scripture: “Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a GUARANTEE.” 2 Corinthians 5:5 Scripture: “It is the Spirit who GIVES LIFE; the flesh profits nothing. So, why does the Devil have two-thirds? Other than the obvious, which is if the whole pie is three-thirds (3/3), and God has one-third (1/3), then the Devil has that which remains, two-thirds (2/3). But let’s explain it beyond the obvious… Again, look at the numbers. The Devil has TWO… THIRDS…because the THREE (which includes the Beast from the Sea/Anti-Christ, the Beast from the Earth/False Prophet, and the Dragon/The Accuser) ARE TWO (the 2 Beasts in Revelation 13)… because the Devil works through the TWO to deceive the 66.6% (the Many), to believe their lies & accept their testimony of the false 2 or 3 witnesses. So, for the Devil, the THREE are indeed TWO. And remember this scripture: “One witness shall not rise against a man concerning any iniquity or any sin that he commits; by the mouth of two or three witnesses the matter shall be established.” Deuteronomy 19:15 Well The Devil is the accuser, He’s been accusing us from the beginning. (& Just like Jesus said, 3 against 2, and 2 against 3, so the devil is)… He is 3 in 2. He had 2 or 3 witnesses against us when He accused us of sin in front of God (according to Revelation 12:10). But the problem is, they were false accusations with false witnesses. He’s been false witnessing through his false prophets, the 2 beasts, and deceiving the world to believe his testimony like a defense lawyer who uses lies to defend a man he knows is guilty. & those who believe his lies become anti-christs like him: “Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now MANY antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour.” 1 John 2:18

Ok, so the scripture said to CALCULATE THE NUMBER. So now, let’s do the math. Let’s start off with God. God has ONE-THIRD: 1 divided by 3 is .33333. But the Devil has TWO THIRDS: 2 divided by 3 is .666666. This makes a total of THREE-THIRDS. The number would stop at 3 digits because 3 is a whole, a solid figure, a body, which I explain what that means the last paragraph. God’s 3 (.333) is His Holy Trinity for which there are 3: Father, Son, & Holy Spirit. All of those who have the Holy Spirit (33.3%) will belong to the population of New Jerusalem (Holy City / Kingdom of God). The Devil’s 3 digits (calculated from his two-thirds) is .666. That is the number of the Beast 666, and his population (66.6%) will be damned to the Lake of Fire. See the Scripture: “Then A THIRD ANGEL [notice how it is a third angel, God used the 3RD because it mimics His one-third] followed them, saying with a loud voice, ‘If anyone worships the beast and his image, AND RECEIVES HIS MARK ON HIS FOREHEAD OR ON HIS HAND, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, AND WHOEVER RECEIVES THE MARK OF HIS NAME.’” Revelation 14:9-11 FYI, it says they will have no rest day nor night because along with their father the devil accused God’s children day & night according to Revelation 12:10. The Bible did indeed say to calculate the number, and that is the calculation. 2 divided by 3 = 666 or 66.6%. It will also be the name of a man (the Man of Sin in 2 Thessalonians 2), which is the Beast of the EARTH in Revelation 13 that is a man (human). Everyone who belongs to him, the devil’s two-thirds, will have his name/his mark on them, and all of them (the number of them) will make up two-thirds of mankind. Two-thirds of mankind 66.6% will have this mark because two-thirds belong to the devil. The devil needs to mark those who belong to him in order to seal them, just as God seals all of His children (His one-third) with His Holy Spirit in the 7th seal of Revelation. That’s why in Revelation 8, Notice how even in the first 4 trumpets, everything that was struck, from ONE-THIRD of vegetation (1st trumpet), to ONE-THIRD of the seas (2nd trumpet), to ONE-THIRD of the waters (3rd trumpet), to ONE-THIRD of the heavens (4th trumpet), to ONE-THIRD of man-kind (6th trumpet)… all was ONE-THIRD of each… Amazing how it came as a result of the prayers of the saints in verse 4 of Revelation 8, who just so happen to be God’s portion of ONE-THIRD, which is exactly who God takes at His 7th Trumpet sound, HIS ONE-THIRD!!! So this confirms, that what remains to receive the bowls of God’s wrath are indeed the devil’s two-thirds of 66.6%, which is his number 666!

The number 3. So why did I say to only use 3 digits? Other than the obvious reasons I stated above about God having 3 (Father, Son, Holy Spirit), and the Devil using 3 to mimic God in order to exalt himself above God, let’s go beyond the obvious. To see why I say to only use 3 digits, you must first understand the meaning of the number 3. Two straight lines cannot possibly enclose any space, or form a plane figure; neither can two plane surfaces form a solid. Three lines are necessary to form a plane figure; and three dimensions of length, breadth, and height, are necessary to form a solid. Hence three is the symbol of the cube–the simplest form of solid figure. Also note: a solid figure is a body or movement (body of people). And the Bible says many times that Jesus is Head of the BODY (God Head) and the church are the members of the BODY, and this body (the BODY of Christ) is the Kingdom of God (Colossians 1:12-18 and Luke 17:21). The number, Three, therefore, stands for that which is solid, real, substantial, complete, and entire. All things that are especially complete are stamped with this number three. There are three great divisions completing time: past, present, and future. Three persons, in grammar, express and include all the relationships of mankind. Thought, word, and deed, complete the sum of human capability. The simplest proposition requires three things to complete it: the subject, the predicate, and the copula. Three propositions are necessary to complete the simplest form of argument: the major premise, the minor, and the conclusion. Three kingdoms embrace our ideas of matter: mineral, vegetable, and animal. When we turn to the Scriptures, this completion becomes Divine, and marks Divine completeness or perfection. God is comprised of three: Father, Son, & Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19). God is the Creator of the Heavens, Earth, & Sea and everything in them (Acts 14:15). God is the God of Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob (Deuteronomy 30:20)… Ever wonder why He stopped at Jacob also known as Israel? Because it was whole at three. God is the first, the last, and the only God (Isaiah 44:6). God’s attributes are three: omniscient, omnipresent, and omnipotent. Three denotes divine perfection. Hence the number three points us to what is real, essential, perfect, substantial, complete, and Divine. So that’s what it is!

About 50 people attended the formal dedication of the Donald J. Trump Justice Complex in Yerington on Saturday, Lyon County Manager Jeff Page said. The complex, which opened in 2013, houses the sheriff’s office, jail, Third Judicial District Court and Walker River Justice Court.

The commissioners approved the new name for the justice complex on a 3-2 vote in August. They originally planned to rename a road in Dayton after Trump but dropped that idea because some residences and businesses would have had to change their address.

The Lyon County Commission discussed a resolution last week that could result in changes in procedures for naming county buildings, parks and other facilities in the future, but that did not affect names already approved, including the Trump complex, Page said.

While Trump was in office, hotels and residential towers in several cities stripped his name off their buildings.

But Trump’s name remains on countless products, golf courses and buildings in the U.S. and other countries, including a non-casino hotel near the Las Vegas Strip. Among the places his name has been added since his presidency is a stretch of U.S. highway in the remote western panhandle of Oklahoma near the Texas state line.

Even as a child, Samuel was given his own tunic, a garment normally reserved for a priest as he ministered before the Lord in the tent of meeting at Shiloh, where the ark of the covenant was kept (1 Samuel 2:18; 3:3). Traditionally, the sons of the priest would succeed their father’s ministry; however, Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were wicked in that they were immoral and showed contempt for the Lord’s offering (1 Samuel 2:17, 22). Meanwhile, Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favor with the Lord and with men (1 Samuel 2:26).

At a time when prophecies and visions were rare, Samuel heard what he first believed to be Eli calling him during the night. Though the young Samuel was ministering in the tabernacle, he still didn’t know the Lord, and the word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him (1 Samuel 3:7). The first three times the Lord called Samuel, the boy responded to Eli. Eli then understood what was happening and instructed Samuel to respond to the Lord if he called again. Then, "The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, ’samuel! Samuel!' Then Samuel said, ’speak, for your servant is listening'" (1 Samuel 3:10). God gave him a message of judgment to relay to Eli. The following day, Samuel took his first leap of faith, telling Eli everything, even though the message was bad news for Eli and his family (1 Samuel 3:11–18). Eli responded with acceptance. Samuel’s credibility as a prophet spread throughout Israel, and God continued to reveal His Word to His people through Samuel (1 Samuel 3:20–21).

The Philistines, perennial enemies of Israel, attacked God’s people. Eli’s sons were killed in the battle, and the ark of the covenant was captured and taken to Philistia. Upon hearing the news of his sons’ deaths, Eli also died. After several months, the Philistines returned the ark to Israel, where it remained at Kiriath Jearim for over twenty years. As the Israelites cried out to God for help against the Philistine oppressors, Samuel instructed them to be rid of the false gods they had been worshiping. With Samuel’s leadership, and by God’s power, the Philistines were overcome, and there was a time of peace between them (1 Samuel 7:9–13). Samuel was recognized as the judge of all Israel.

Like Eli’s sons, Samuel’s two sons, Joel and Abijah, sinned before God by seeking dishonest gain and perverting justice. Samuel had appointed his sons as judges, but the elders of Israel told Samuel that because he was too old and his sons did not walk in his ways, they wanted Samuel to appoint a king to rule like other nations had (1 Samuel 8:1–5). Samuel’s initial reaction to their demand was one of great displeasure, and he prayed to God about the matter. God told Samuel that they had not rejected him, but had rejected God as their king. God gave Samuel leave to permit their request but warned the people what they could expect from a king (1 Samuel 8:6–21).

In time, Saul, a Benjamite, was anointed by Samuel as Israel’s first king (1 Samuel 10:1). Even so, Samuel called on God for a sign to show the Israelites the evil of choosing to replace their true king—God—with an earthly king (1 Samuel 12:16–18). After a time, Samuel learned that Saul had been rejected by God to lead His people because of Saul’s disobedience (1 Samuel 13:11–13). Samuel immediately warned Saul that God had already sought out a replacement for him (1 Samuel 13:14). After Saul continued to disobey, Samuel denounced him as king (1 Samuel 15:26). Samuel returned home, never to be at King Saul’s side again, but he mourned for him (1 Samuel 15:35). God instructed Samuel to choose another king from the family of Jesse (1 Samuel 16:1), and Samuel anointed Jesse’s youngest son, David (1 Samuel 16:13). Samuel died before David was made king, though, and "all Israel assembled and mourned for him" (1 Samuel 25:1).

The life of Samuel was pivotal in Israel’s history. He was a prophet, he anointed the first two kings of Israel, and he was the last in the line of Israel’s judges, considered by many as the greatest judge (Acts 13:20). Samuel is cited alongside Moses and Aaron as men who called on God and were answered (Psalm 99:6). Later in Israel’s history, when the Israelites were living in disobedience to God, the Lord declared they were beyond even the defense of Moses and Samuel, two of Israel’s greatest intercessors (Jeremiah 15:1). This is a clear indication of the power of Samuel’s prayers—and the depth of Israel’s sin in Jeremiah’s day.

There is much to learn from the life of Samuel. In particular, we see the sovereignty of God in Israel, no matter whom the people chose to reign over them. We may allow other things or people to occupy the throne of our hearts, but God will always remain sovereign and will never accept usurpers to His authority in the lives of His subjects.

We can imagine how daunting it must have been for the young Samuel to give an honest account of his first vision to Eli. However, it appears that, even from a young age, Samuel’s absolute allegiance was to God first. There may be times when we feel intimidated by those in authority, but, as Samuel proved more than once, it is God who must remain our priority. The world may look on us cynically when we remain steadfast in our faith. However, we can be confident that God will vindicate those who have remained faithful to His Word (Psalm 135:14).

Though Samuel had deep reservations about letting the people have a king, he was quick to consult God about the matter and abided by His decision (1 Samuel 8:6–7). Many of us may consult God about important decisions in our lives, but how many of us are ready to accept His counsel and abide by it, especially when it appears to go against our own desires? Leaders in particular can learn from Samuel’s example of the power he derived from his close relationship with God, generated by a healthy prayer life. Samuel was a great man of prayer, and his people respected him for it (1 Samuel 12:19, 23). Even though Samuel was aware of the evil in Saul’s life, he never stopped praying and mourning for him. Indeed, Samuel described it as a sin not to pray for the people under his care. Perhaps too quickly we may deem a brother beyond restoration when we see him fall into sin. Certainly, God’s plans for each individual will come to pass, but it should never stop us from continuing to pray and care for those who are weaker in their faith (Romans 15:1; 1 Thessalonians 5:14).

The main theme throughout Samuel’s life is that God alone should receive the glory and honor. After making his sons judges, it must have been a very sad thing for Samuel to learn that they were unfit to lead. When he consulted God about the people’s request for a king, nothing was said in defense of his sons. Samuel was obedient to God’s instructions to give the people what they wanted.

A key verse in the life of Samuel relates his words to King Saul: “But Samuel replied: ‘Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams’” (1 Samuel 15:22). Obedience to God’s Word must always be our top priority.
